LEADERSHIP IN THE WORKPLACE-

Discover the Treasure of Leadership WITHIN YOU

As a budding health care professional, I strongly believe professionals in health care industry need to be dynamic , lively ,charming and deliver their roles with the skill of your own , passion to thrive and service for the mankind . I don’t see survival and leadership to be two distinct aspects. Every survivor has a leader within him/herself. Leadership is not only meant for leading an organization, group of people , but more importantly where we are leading ourselves to……

Based upon my observations……I have seen various people in my life starting from the entrance to the very core personalities responsible for the functioning of the hospital showing numerous leadership qualities in their own ways , patients at times have depicted their s as well , be it fighting the disease or with the hospital staff…(laugh) .  What’s the downside …..we don’t have time to recognize others or even ourselves as a leader ….

A leader blessed with all powers to lead , to awaken within , to enlighten oneself & others, to raise voice against what is not right or wrong ………strangely I see people using the leadership in many different ways , one cannot say it is wrong , but at that same time you cannot accept it to be right either ….it s a dilemma….

Work is worship, workplace is like a temple.  In that case we should all be enjoying a peaceful and smooth

working all the year around, all of just doing our daily rituals and going in search of enlighten (you never feel that you are working but delighted in playing you part )  like followers of God. But why does reality beg to vary? Why is there an always a commotion, an emotional cold war, ego clashes, frustration and envy today in our workplaces?  Let’s ponder on some more questions:

Frankly speaking are we all happy all 365 days in our workplace?

How many of us feel betrayed? How many of us just look up for a chance to show what we really are?

How many of us feel emasculated and manipulated by our heads, no matter whatever our jobs may be?

How many times have you felt literally running away from the workplace when your people above you or people below just don’t seem to work with you?

Are there times when you had wondered that if had power and position I would change this entire workplace into an awesome place for people to be in , or I would something highly beneficial and efficient than the current people in higher posts ?

I’m sure at least one or all the above questions would have hit your thoughts some time or the other in one work or the other in various situations ……and most of the times you only thought it would be nice if this scenario changes and played the blame game to run away from guilt & frustration.

How many of you read/ hearing this paper have risen to the situation and solved the above questions?  May be a handful in Indian workplace scenario, what about the rest?

What does leadership has to do anything mentioned in the above paragraph?

Let’s start with the blame game: it a vicious cycle: either it starts from bottom to the top , or from top to bottom management , the latter is the worst case scenario . Here comes the question that who is responsible? You, me or people below/above you & me, the head, the CEO, the Founder....etc., in most instances the leader is blamed. Why so?

one – we play blame game , two-we complain three- we give excuses such has- no power, no authority, no orders, not in my hands etc and more importantly failing to recognize the leader in ourselves !

AT THIS POINT OF TIME WE HAVE TO BREAK SOME MYTHS/BELIEFS THAT ARE COMMONLY SEEN IN TODAYS WORKPLACE SCENARIO:

MYTH1: Leaders are separate people in an organization.

REALITY: Everyone in the organizations have their own leadership roles to play according to our job specifications and duties.

MYTH2: Leadership comes with a certain position or post, personality to command in an organization.

REALITY: Leadership at one time meant muscles; but today it means getting along with people and leadership doesn’t come with any particular post but is required at every post. Leadership is action, not position.”

MYTH3: Leader just sits in the top and commands; he always says to do things to his subordinates and has no role in between.

REALITY: The first responsibility of a leader is to define reality. The last is to say thank you. In between, the leader is a servant.”

MYTH4: The leader  is a well recognized personality and successful leadership means to have proven achieving goals by her/ him or because of him/her.

REALITY:

A leader is best when people barely know he exists, when his work is done, his aim fulfilled, they will say: we did it ourselves.

When the effective leader is finished with his work, the people say it happened naturally.

The leaders who work most effectively, it seems to me, never say 'I'. And that's not because they have trained themselves not to say 'I'. They don't think 'I'. They think 'we'; they think 'team'. They understand their job to be to make the team function. They accept responsibility and don't sidestep it, but 'we' gets the credit.... This is what creates trust, what enables you to get the task done.”

MYTH5: The signs of leadership are the leadership qualities a person posses and the number of followers he has …

REALITY: The signs of outstanding leadership appear primarily among the followers. Are the followers reaching their potential? Are they learning? Serving? Do they achieve the required results? Do they change with grace? Manage conflict?”

The led must not be compelled; they must be able to choose their own leader.

MYTH6: A leader is a personality who knows all ,is always right or stubborn.

REALITY:

Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other.

Enduring setbacks while maintaining the ability to show others the way to go forward is a true test of leadership.

Leadership does not depend on being right.

MYTH 7: LEADERSHIP MEANS POWER

REALITY: Leadership is power, But power is not necessarily leadership. Power is the ability to get others to do what you want them to do. Power is the ability to achieve purpose.

GREATEST MYTH OF ALL TIMES:

MYTH 8: LEADERS ARE BORN NOT MADE

                 LEADERS ARE MADE NOT BORN

PEOPLE USUALLY AGREE TO ONE OF THE ABOVE STATEMENTS ……

Can any reasonable person agree to both ……?

Let’s read it this way:

        LEADERS ARE MADE NOT BORN

                   ……..LEADERS ARE BORN NOT MADE

IMPLICATION: Yes you, me anyone can be made into a leader

How can you be a born leader ….?

BUT ONCE YOU REALISE THIS,

Once you want to develop this quality, a necessity or a need in the workplace.

Once you feel the desire to emerge as Numerate.

REMEMBER ….

It should be a rebirth for you ….

              Birth signifies------------emergence

It s like caterpillar being born  as a butterfly

After the transformation  you should feel the pulse that you were born to be a leader

WHAT IS IMPORTANT?

        Developing leadership quality, skills.

Desire to encase leadership in workplace.

        Adapting various leadership styles

Understanding the role as a leader (avoiding role confusions).

Learning how to be an effective leader

WHAT IS MORE IMPORTANT?

Transforming into a leader is tough

Toughest is to feel your rebirth …..

Feel that you were born to be a leader

Reinforcement, faith in oneself and in god would let you feel your rebirth …….

Ready to be a born leader ………………???

If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.

Now the leadership instinct that is born within you is the backbone. You develop the funny bone and the wishbone that go with it.

Good leaders emerge as result of a never ending process of self-study, education, training, and experience.

Thiruvalluvar, the tamil poet had mentioned 2000 Years back, quoted the same in thirukural as

“THUNGAMAI KALVI THUNIVUADMAI IMMUNRUM  NINGA NILANALL PAVARKU”

Leader should have alertness, education, and Courage to lead people.

REMEMBER,

Leadership is much more an art, a belief, a condition of the heart, than a set of things to do. The visible signs of artful leadership are expressed, ultimately, in its practice.

Leadership is not a one-day thing. It is a constant commitment to excellence, a habit . . . a daily practice.

WHAT ARE THE SOME QUALITIES THAT REQUIRED TO  PORTRAY LEADERSHIP IN A WORKPLACE?

Nothing so conclusively proves a man's ability to lead others as what he does from day to day to lead himself.

A leader's role is to raise people's aspirations for what they can become and to release their energies so they will try to get there.

The leader has to be practical and a realist yet must talk the language of the visionary and the idealist.

Lead and inspire people. Don't try to manage and manipulate people. Inventories can be managed but people must be lead.

The growth and development of people is the highest calling of leadership.

The function of leadership is to produce more leaders, not more followers.

Without initiative, leaders are simply workers in leadership positions.

Leadership is the ability to recognize a problem before it becomes an emergency.

Competence goes beyond words. It's the leader's ability to say it, plan it, and do it in such a way that others know that you know how - and know that they want to follow you.”

The challenge of leadership is to be strong, but not rude; be kind, but not weak; be bold, but not bully; be thoughtful, but not lazy; be humble, but not timid; be proud, but not arrogant; have humor, but without folly.”

HAVING UNDERSTOOD LEADERSHIP IN WORKPLACE IS INDISPENSABLE FOR EACH ONE OF US

WHAT SHOULD WE DO ?

Decide – SHOULD I BE A LEADER?

If so, then

What the qualities I posses as a leader?

What are those which I should develop?

What sort of training are available to develop this quality ?

Which leadership style is most suited to my workplace/ job?

What are needs of me leading others?

Where should I lead them and how?

What sort of leader should I be to keep my group together?

What sort of leader should I be to make my group productive?

What sort of leader should I be so that i can maintain a good deal of job satisfaction among the group members?

TIP:

There are various leadership style one could choose upon but don’t attach yourself to one type of style alone .....because the human beings we deal with are not the same .

Which leadership is good after analyzing all these leadership styles?

In my opinion, situational leadership is best among all these leadership styles, because a leader need to change his leadership according to the situation. Some time he needs to be tough with his subordinates if they are not doing well, some time he needs to teach his subordinates, some time when there is some conflict arises between two subordinates than he need to take democratic approach to deal with their problem. Like this, he needs to change his leadership styles according to the situation.

Because,

It is quite dangerous for an organization to think they can predict where they are going to need leadership. It needs to be something that people are willing to assume if it feels relevant, given the context of any situation.

I think a major act of leadership right now, call it a radical act, is to create the places and processes so people can actually learn together, using our experiences.

I believe that the capacity that any organization needs is for leadership to appear anywhere it is needed, when it is needed.

FABLES TO PROVE WHY THE ABOVE MENTIONED MYTHS HAVE TO BE BROKEN:

THE SOLDIERS AND THE TRENCH STORY

The story goes that sometime, close to a battlefield over 200 years ago, a man in civilian clothes rode past a small group of exhausted battle-weary soldiers digging an obviously important defensive position. The section leader, making no effort to help, was shouting orders, threatening punishment if the work was not completed within the hour.

"Why are you are not helping?" asked the stranger on horseback.

"I am in charge. The men do as I tell them," said the section leader, adding, "Help them yourself if you feel strongly about it."

To the section leader's surprise the stranger dismounted and helped the men until the job was finished.

Before leaving the stranger congratulated the men for their work, and approached the puzzled section leader.

"You should notify top command next time your rank prevents you from supporting your men - and I will provide a more permanent solution," said the stranger.

Up close, the section leader now recognized General Washington, and also the lesson he'd just been taught.

BEING TOO MUCH OF A PEOPLE ORIENTED LEADER.....HAS ITS CONSEQUENCES: DONT BE BIASED.

A man found a cocoon for a butterfly. One day a small opening appeared, he sat and watched the butterfly for several hours as it struggled to force its body through the little hole. Then it seemed to stop making any progress. It appeared stuck.

The man decided to help the butterfly and with a pair of scissors he cut open the cocoon. The butterfly then emerged easily. Something was strange. The butterfly had a swollen body and shrivelled wings. The man watched the butterfly expecting it to take on its correct proportions. But nothing changed.

The butterfly stayed the same. It was never able to fly. In his kindness and haste the man did not realise that the butterfly's struggle to get through the small opening of the cocoon is nature's way of forcing fluid from the body of the butterfly into its wings so that it would be ready for flight.

Like the sapling which grows strong from being buffeted by the wind, in life we all need to struggle sometimes to make us strong.

When we coach and teach others it is helpful to recognize when people need to do things for themselves.

A good leader inspires people to have confidence in the leader; a great leader inspires people to have confidence in themselves

CONCLUSION

I believe our paper has shed some light in the chosen topic and the take-home message being simplified leadership in workplace is an absolutely essential for every employee of all cadres.

We are all leaders in a workplace, we should realize this . stop complaining or blaming and take the responsibility , you not be told that you are a leader, but thy presence be felt when you are there and when you have left, your foot prints should lead others to glory , doesn’t matter either way it would teach others what should be done or what shouldn’t be done …..life is enriched by experiences ………..Experiences  in one’s life Or from other s life.

IMPORTANTLY , followers doesn’t imply to group of people following you, even if one soul imbibes your trait, quality or principle which he identifies in you and believes it be an essential and inspired by you takes it as a lesson for life , let it even be the smallest of all of his actions ,they you go you have a follower…..

A good leader would never hide his mistakes , but stand for what he is , as for him post , position , authority , recognition doesn’t matter , he would selfless & do his part in what he believes the best ,,,!!!!!

To lead people, walk beside them ...
As for the best leaders, the people do not notice their existence.
The next best, the people honor and praise.
The next, the people fear;
and the next, the people hate ...
When the best leader's work is done the people say,
"We did it ourselves!"
- Lao-tsu

TRANSFORM YOURSELF INTO A BORN LEADER FEEL THE WORLD AS A BETTER PLACE AND MAKE THIS WORLD AS A BETTER PLACE, IF YOU CHOOSE TO LEAD OR SIMPLY FOLLOW, CHOICE IS YOURS.

“Take care, do not fight, and remember: if you do not choose to lead, you will forever be led by others. Find what scares you, and do it. And you can make a difference, if you choose to do so.”
